The Little Things

Beautiful sunset with moon outside of my apartment

It’s a phrase you hear constantly throughout your life, “Life’s all about the little things.” This short phrase holds so much meaning, because in a way it’s defining what life is truly about. No one knows the absolute, certain meaning of life, and truthfully the meaning of life is whatever meaning you give it. This doesn’t stop one from pondering why we’re where we are, and if you’re like me, the question behind the meaning of life can keep you lying awake in bed for hours, just thinking. Yes, this is known as an existential crisis and yes, I have them frequently. For whatever reason though, we are here, on earth, together as a species. In any stage of life, through any mental illness, despite all of the bad that happens, the one thing everyone can always count on is the little moments of happiness and joy that make life worthwhile. These moments create bonds, they strengthen our connection with the world, they even play a part in our drive to get up in the morning because without the promise of at least one moment of happiness it becomes difficult to motivate yourself to do anything at all. When you lose touch with the world, you start to notice these moments less and less. Eventually, life will just feel like a big blur unless you consciously decide to pay better attention to the little things in life. Take in the beauty, search for the good in all of the bad.
